Revolutionizing Paper Production with Smart Vacuum Pressing

Introduction

The pulp and paper industry is one of the most energy-intensive process industries in the world — and the dryer section alone accounts for up to 50% of a mill’s total energy consumption.

Occzendo is developing Smart Vacuum Pressing (SVP), a disruptive patented solution that replaces traditional press nips with a vacuum-controlled dewatering process. This enables far more efficient water removal, minimizes rewetting, and dramatically reduces the cost of energy, CO₂, and operations.

SVP represents the first major process innovation in press technology in more than 40 years and can be installed in both new and existing production lines — often as a simple plug-and-play replacement for standard shoe presses.

Key Facts

  • 10-20% drying energy reduction (100–500 kWh per ton)

  • Up to 9.2 million tons of CO₂ reduction globally

  • Up to 10-20% higher production thanks to increased drying capacity

  • Lab-verified performance (+13.7% more water removed)

  • Scalable to 4,400+ production lines worldwide

  • Fully compatible with all press configurations in all grades, including retrofitting modern shoe press configurations

  • Patented in the EU, US, Brazil and expanding

  • Backed by the Swedish Energy Agency & Vinnova

Smart Vacuum Pressing (SVP)

Higher efficiency. Lower energy. A new standard for sustainable pulp & paper production.

Smart Vacuum Pressing (SVP) is a breakthrough technology that increases dryness after the press section and significantly reduces energy demand in the dryer — the most energy-intensive stage in pulp and paper manufacturing.

This illustration shows the Smart Vacuum Pressing (SVP) process, where fiber pulp is transformed into dewatered material through a vacuum-assisted press nip. As water is efficiently extracted and collected, the system enables significantly higher dryness levels before the dryer section. The result is optimized output, reduced energy consumption, and increased potential for energy recovery across the production line.
